Soca songstress Destra Garcia is promising an event unlike any other come February 11 when she will stage her inaugural full-length concert, House of Bakanal at the O2 Park in Chaguaramas. The event called Bakanal Wednesday follows in the footsteps of other artistes who have over the years, created specially designated days during the Carnival season, in which they give fans a repertoire of their music. Some of the artistes to precede Garcia’s Bakanal Wednesday include Machel Montano who hosts Machel Monday, Iwer George with his Iwer Saturday and Kes the Band’s Tuesday on the Rocks.
Garcia held a press conference At the Digicel Box, Queen’s Park Oval to officially launch the event. She told media the show was long in the making.
“I have been trying do this for the longest while and kept putting it off because of my inhibitions. I always felt I did not have enough music. There was always just some reason. But I felt like now was the right time to really go through with it,” said Garcia.
She said with fellow artistes showing that example and taking their careers to the next level. She felt that 2015 was that year for her to take it up a notch not just because of the success of her groovy Carnival offering Lucy, but because her fans are requesting more of her.
Garcia added it was the call for more appearances at fetes particularly this Carnival season that also drove her to staging the event.
Asked whether her sparse at main events this year was deliberate as a strategic move for her upcoming event, Garcia said she believed that God is always in control of everything in life and there was no deliberate move, rather just the right timing.
Although the Lucy singer did not want to unearth too much about her event, she did hint it was going to be a showstopper where she would be pulling out all the stops.
“When you come to Bakanal Wednesday, you are entering the house of bacchanal. It is where you will get to see the many moods of Destra.”
She said patrons can expect a lot of theatrics at the event, as well as exciting collaborations with other artistes.
The self-proclaimed Queen of Bacchanal, who produced her 11th album this year, has also been staging a series of promotional acts on Wednesdays, called Queen of Bacchanal Wednesdays leading up to the main event. The promotions include sporadic giveaways and surprise visits to fans.
“This is something we have been doing every Wednesday since the season began. Last Wednesday, we were at City Gate and we boarded the buses and sponsored fares for commuters,” said Garcia who will be competing in the Digicel Groovy Soca category on Fantastic Friday.
Bakanal Wednesday is sponsored by Slam 100.5FM, Coldstone Creamery and it’s main sponsor Digicel. Digicel senior sponsorship manager Christopher Edmond, said the company was happy to be a part of this auspicious event and happy to work with Garcia who has been a part of the Digicel family for the past nine years as a spokesperson.
He said as a Digicel endorsee, Garcia has lent her unwavering support to various Digicel initiatives including the Digicel Burn Series. She has also been an instrumental part the success of the Digicel Rising Stars reality series through her mentorship. And has also partnered with them in a number of charitable causes.
