For the second time, the scenic Pigeon Point beach came alive for Tobago’s mega reggae concert. Reggae on The Beach 2014, which took place on August 23, was branded “A Night of Royalty’’ as reggae veterans Barrington Levy and Everton Blender shared the stage with rising reggae sensations Romain Virgo, Christopher Martin, Loyal Flames and local artiste Gardah Knight. Gardah Knight and Princess Adana, both from Tobago, performed in front of their largest crowd ever and were well received. Everton Blender, who performed alongside his daughter Isha Blender, blessed the stage with conscious lyrics with the intentions to entertain and edify.
Loyal Flames, a breakout reggae artiste, gave an exciting performance that surprised many, given his relatively short time in the genre. He comes from humble beginnings and has a background in agriculture and construction. In his first performance in T&T, Christopher Martin delivered love songs that captivated the women in the audience. Romain Virgo was greeted with thunderous applause as he started singing from backstage. His rendition of Stay With had the crowd swaying and couples danced as Virgo crooned soulfully.
In an interview, Romain indicated he enjoys performing in Tobago and added that he felt right at home. He was so hyped that he agreed to sing one of his 2011 soca tunes. Barrington Levy, the highlight of the night, closed the show with his sweet pulsating voice. He belted out his hits like Black, Roses, Rosie, Too Experienced and Murder. Reggae on the Beach promoters BWV Entertainment said they are pleased at the success of the show, and have already started planning the 2015 edition.
